Guixi is the seat of Dianjiang County in the northeast of Chongqing Municipality. The land here is folded into long, parallel ridges with broad valleys between them, and the town occupies one of those valleys. From above, the map has a strong sense of direction: streets, roads and farmland all tend to line up with the grain of the hills around them.
Like many county towns in the Chongqing region, Guixi has grown considerably in recent decades. A compact older centre sits among newer districts of wider roads and larger blocks, and development has pushed out across the valley floor. Small rivers and reservoirs appear among the fields, and expressways and rail lines thread through the gaps in the ridges.
A Guixi map poster shows the town as a patch of dense streets set inside a much larger landscape of terraces, streams and slopes.
