Sanhe is the urban seat of Fengdu County in Chongqing, and it sits on the Yangtze where the river has been widened into a reservoir by the Three Gorges Dam. The town was largely rebuilt when the waters rose, so its streets are newer and more regular than the river setting might suggest. The shoreline is the defining edge of any map here.
The terrain is steep. Streets follow the contours of the slopes above the water, curving back and forth in terraces, while the main roads run along the riverbank. Bridges cross the Yangtze toward the opposite shore. Beyond the built-up area, the land rises quickly into green hills that frame the town.
