Te mapa
Nanchuan is a district of Chongqing municipality, lying in hilly country to the south-east of the main city. Its urban centre occupies a basin among the hills, so on the map the built-up area follows the lower ground, with streets bending around slopes and small rivers running through. Newer neighbourhoods climb onto the gentler hillsides, leaving the steeper ground to forest and farmland.
The district is best known for Jinfo Mountain, a limestone massif with sheer cliffs, caves and dense forest that forms part of the South China Karst World Heritage Site. On a wider map the mountain appears as a tight tangle of contours rising steeply above the surrounding countryside, a striking counterpoint to the compact town below.
A Nanchuan map poster works well for anyone who calls the district home or has made the trip up to the mountain. In black and white, the shape of the town and the folded land around it read as a quiet study of how a city fits itself into steep, uneven terrain, one street at a time.
The town centre sits on the lower ground between hills, so its streets curve and branch rather than forming a grid, following the shape of the land.
South-east of the town, the Jinfo massif rises in steep limestone cliffs, part of the South China Karst World Heritage Site and the district's defining landmark.
Beyond the urban edge, winding roads and scattered villages spread across the hills, giving the outer parts of the map a loose, organic texture.
