Taibai is one of the urban districts of Wanzhou, in north-eastern Chongqing, on the upper Yangtze. From above, the river decides everything. The Yangtze is wide here because of the Three Gorges reservoir, and the city's streets climb in tight, curving bands up the steep slopes from the water.
The completion of the Three Gorges Dam raised the river level and reshaped Wanzhou. Old riverside districts were submerged, and new ones were built higher up the slopes. The name Taibai recalls the courtesy name of the Tang-dynasty poet Li Bai, whose memory is honoured in the city's local landmarks.
