Te mapa
Hervey Bay is a string of seaside suburbs along the coast of southeast Queensland, joined by a continuous esplanade that follows the shoreline. From above, the city is wide rather than deep, a band of streets running parallel to the water, with the calm bay in front and farmland and bushland behind.
Across the water lies K'gari, formerly Fraser Island, the world's largest sand island, which shelters the bay from the open Pacific. That protection makes the bay a resting place for migrating humpback whales in the cooler months, and Hervey Bay has become one of Australia's best-known whale-watching centres.
At the eastern end, Urangan Pier extends far into the shallows, a long thin line that is unmistakable on the map. A Hervey Bay map poster frames the city as it really is: a coastline first, with neighbourhoods drawn along it and open water filling a large part of the sheet.
A continuous coastal road links the old seaside villages that grew into the city, tracing the shoreline in a single long curve across the poster.
The historic timber pier runs straight out into the bay from Urangan, one of the most distinctive lines on the map of the whole coast.
Calm water fills the northern part of the frame, protected by K'gari, and gives the composition generous empty space against the dense suburbs.

Koteā ko Hervey Bay
Hervey Bay is a place of holidays, retirements and seasons spent watching whales, and its coastline makes a strong, simple image. A poster keeps that stretch of shore close long after the trip ends.
