Hofgeismar lies north of Kassel in a gently rolling part of northern Hesse. Its old town forms a compact, rounded core of narrow streets and half-timbered houses, still following the line of the medieval town layout, with later residential districts spreading out on all sides.
To the east stretches the Reinhardswald, one of the largest continuous forests in Germany. Within the municipality lies the Sababurg, a castle associated with the Sleeping Beauty tale, which gives the area a strong link to the German Fairy Tale Route.
