Honjō Map Poster & Print

Honjō is the central settlement of a small town in Miyazaki prefecture, on the island of Kyushu, inland from the city of Miyazaki. The map shows a compact core of streets along the main roads, surrounded by the fine, rectangular pattern of rice paddies. Wooded hills rise at the edges, and rivers run through the valley floor.

The area has a long history of settlement. A group of ancient burial mounds, the Honjō kofun, lies in the surrounding district, and some of these tumuli show up on detailed maps as small rounded shapes among the fields. Otherwise the town has the quiet, practical layout of rural Kyushu.

A Honjō map poster brings together the dense lanes of the centre, the ruled lines of the paddies and the softer outlines of the hills. It is an understated composition that reflects a place shaped by farming, rivers and a very long human presence in the landscape.

01

Paddy field pattern

Rice paddies around the town form a fine grid of small plots, a texture that fills much of the map and frames the settlement.

02

Ancient burial mounds

The Honjō kofun group, a cluster of ancient tumuli, lies in the surrounding area and adds rounded shapes to the otherwise rectangular farmland.

03

River valley

Rivers wind along the valley floor below the hills, giving the composition a natural curve that contrasts with the town's straighter roads.
