Te mapa
Hoofddorp stands on land that was a lake until the middle of the nineteenth century. The Haarlemmermeer was pumped dry between 1849 and 1852, and the new polder was divided with engineering precision into rectangular lots, straight roads and drainage canals. Hoofddorp grew where the main canal, the Hoofdvaart, met the central cross road, and it is now the administrative centre of the municipality.
The ground here lies several metres below sea level, and the Cruquius pumping station, one of those that drained the lake, is preserved nearby as a museum. Schiphol airport sits just to the north-east, and business districts and newer neighbourhoods have spread outward from the old village core, including the parkland created for the Floriade horticultural exhibition in 2002.
On a Hoofddorp map poster, the polder logic is unmistakable. Straight water lines run toward the horizon, further out the ring canal traces the old lake shore, and the town sits where the grid's main axes meet. Curving residential streets and the woodland of the Haarlemmermeerse Bos soften the geometry without hiding it.
The main polder canal runs arrow-straight through the town, the line along which Hoofddorp first developed and still the clearest single stroke on the map.
Around the built-up area, fields, ditches and roads follow the regular division made when the lake was drained, producing a pattern of long, precise rectangles.
This planted woodland beside the town adds a patch of looping paths and ponds, a deliberate softness within an otherwise engineered landscape.

Koteā ko Hoofddorp
Hoofddorp's map explains itself: a landscape made by people, measured out with rulers and kept dry by pumps. It appeals to anyone who works around Schiphol, grew up in the polder, or simply likes the clarity of Dutch planning.
