The Jordaan lies west of the Prinsengracht, and on a map it is immediately recognisable because its grid is turned at an angle to the concentric ring canals beside it. It was laid out in the seventeenth century as a working-class district, with streets and canals following the direction of older drainage ditches rather than the curve of the main canal belt.
Many streets and canals are named after flowers and plants, such as Bloemgracht, Rozengracht, Lauriergracht and Egelantiersgracht. The Westerkerk stands at its eastern edge beside the Prinsengracht, near the Anne Frank House, and the Noordermarkt holds weekly markets around its church. Several canals were later filled in and became streets.
A Jordaan map poster shows the meeting of two street systems. The smooth arcs of the ring canals on one side meet the straight, angled lanes of the Jordaan on the other, and the water appears as fine parallel lines that give the whole print a quiet order.
