Te mapa
Hrodna, also known as Grodno, grew on the high right bank of the Neman River in western Belarus, close to the borders with Poland and Lithuania. On a map the river swings through the city in a wide curve, and the old centre sits on the elevated bank above it, its streets arranged around a central square.
Hrodna was among the few Belarusian cities to escape heavy destruction in the Second World War, so much of its historic fabric survives. On the bluff stand the Old and New Castles, and nearby the twelfth-century Kalozha Church of Saints Boris and Gleb, one of the oldest buildings in the country.
A Hrodna map poster captures the dialogue between river and town: bridges crossing to the southern districts, green slopes along the banks, and the regular blocks of newer neighbourhoods spreading outward from the historic core. Not far to the northwest runs the Augustów Canal, a nineteenth-century waterway that continues into Poland.
The river bends through the city in a broad arc, drawn as a strong central line with bridges linking the old centre to the opposite bank.
Above the river, the Old and New Castles occupy the edge of the high bank, marking the historic point where the city first took shape.
Around the main square, streets of the old town keep an irregular pre-modern pattern, clearly distinct from the straighter grids of later districts.
