Te mapa
Hsipaw sits in the hills of northern Shan State in Myanmar, on the banks of the Dokhtawady River, also known as the Myitnge. From above, the town is a modest grid of streets beside the water. The river curves along one side, and the main highway from Mandalay to Lashio passes through, which gives the town a clear line of approach.
Hsipaw was once the seat of a Shan princely state, and the old haw, or palace, of its saophas still stands on the edge of town. The railway from Mandalay also reaches Hsipaw after crossing the famous Gokteik Viaduct further west. That line is one of the reasons the town became a base for travellers who come to trek to nearby villages.
A Hsipaw map poster brings together the river, the rail line and the tidy town grid in a single frame. Around them, the valley floor and the rising hills give the composition a feeling of space. It is a small place with a clear shape and a story beyond its size.
The wide river runs along the town and shapes its edge. On the poster it is the strongest natural line, a smooth curve against the straight streets.
The Mandalay–Lashio road and the railway both pass through Hsipaw. Their long lines connect the town to the rest of Shan State and cross the sheet with purpose.
The centre is laid out in short, fairly regular blocks near the river. It forms a neat, legible core that reads well at every print size.

Koteā ko Hsipaw
Many people remember Hsipaw from the slow train over Gokteik or from walking out to the hill villages. A map of the town keeps that journey on the wall, and it also suits anyone with family ties to Shan State.
