Te mapa
Huancayo lies at around 3,250 metres in the Mantaro Valley, in Peru's central highlands, one of the widest and most fertile valleys of the Andes. The city is elongated, following the direction of the valley, and its streets form a regular grid that stretches for kilometres across the valley floor. Mountains rise on both sides, so the urban area appears as a long band across the map.
The Calle Real, a long central avenue, runs through the heart of the city and links its main squares. Huancayo is a major market town for the region's agriculture and crafts, and it is the terminus of the Ferrocarril Central Andino from Lima, one of the highest railways in the world, which crosses the Andes on its way here.
A Huancayo map poster captures a city shaped by its valley: a straight central spine, a dense and repeated grid, and small rivers descending from the mountains to cross the streets on their way to the Mantaro. The effect is rhythmic and orderly, with the surrounding slopes suggested by where the streets simply stop.
The long main avenue runs through the city centre along the valley, a strong straight line that anchors the grid and connects the main squares.
Repeated rectangular blocks spread across the flat valley floor, giving the city a dense, regular texture from one end to the other.
Rivers descending from the surrounding slopes cross the city on their way to the Mantaro, drawing thin diagonal lines through the grid.

Koteā ko Huancayo
Huancayo is home for many families of the central Andes and a memorable stop for travellers who arrive by the mountain railway. A map of its long grid makes a quiet, distinctive piece that reads well in a vertical or wide frame.
