Ifakara sits in the Kilombero Valley in south-central Tanzania, close to the Kilombero River and at the edge of one of the largest seasonal floodplains in East Africa. The town is a low, spread-out network of streets and compounds on slightly higher ground, surrounded by rice fields and wetlands that change shape with the rains.
For decades the river crossing south of town was made by ferry, until a road bridge over the Kilombero opened in the late 2010s. The Udzungwa Mountains rise to the north and the TAZARA railway passes through the valley, so the map shows Ifakara as a meeting point of road, rail, river and wetland.
The town is widely known in public health for the Ifakara Health Institute, whose research on malaria and other diseases is cited around the world. The river crossing
The bridge over the Kilombero replaced the old ferry and forms a clear line across the water, linking Ifakara with the districts on the southern bank.
