Te mapa
Mafia lies in the Indian Ocean south of Zanzibar, facing the Rufiji delta on the Tanzanian mainland. Seen from above, the island is long and irregular, running roughly north-east to south-west. The western shore faces the channel toward the mainland, and reefs line the eastern side. A cluster of smaller islands and sandbanks trails off the south-east around a sheltered bay.
Kilindoni, the main town and port, sits on the west coast, where most of the island's roads are. From there a main road crosses to the eastern villages and lodges, with tracks branching through farmland and coconut plantations. Much of the coast is mangrove, so the edges of the island look soft and feathered. A Mafia Island map poster captures that delicate edge well.
Mafia Island Marine Park, the first of its kind in Tanzania, protects the reefs, seagrass beds and mangroves around the south-east of the island. The waters off Kilindoni are known for whale sharks during part of the year. On the small nearby island of Chole stand the ruins of an old trading settlement.

The island's port and main town on the west coast, where a denser web of streets meets the channel that faces the mainland.
Long stretches of shoreline are fringed with mangroves and tidal flats, which give the island's outline a finely textured, irregular look on paper.
