Te mapa
Dar es Salaam sits on the Indian Ocean coast of Tanzania, around a natural harbour that opens to the sea through a narrow channel. The name means haven of peace, and the town was founded in the 1860s by Sultan Majid of Zanzibar before becoming a colonial capital under German and later British rule.
On the map, the compact city centre lies beside the harbour, with a tighter grid of older streets around Kivukoni and Kariakoo. From here major roads such as Morogoro Road, Bagamoyo Road and Nyerere Road fan out inland, and the city has grown along these corridors in long, dense bands.
To the north, the Msasani Peninsula juts into the ocean with beaches and residential streets, while Kigamboni, across the harbour mouth, is reached by ferry and by a bridge opened in 2016. Dodoma is now the official capital, but a Dar es Salaam map poster shows the country's largest city and main port.

A finger of land reaching north into the Indian Ocean, lined with beaches and quiet residential streets, giving the coastline a distinctive projecting shape.
Major roads spreading outward from the centre toward the interior and along the coast, forming a clear spoke-like pattern across the growing city.
