Pemba lies in the Indian Ocean north of Unguja, the main island of the Zanzibar Archipelago, separated from the Tanzanian mainland by the deep Pemba Channel. From above it is long and narrow, running north to south, with a coastline far more ragged than its size suggests. Creeks and inlets reach deep inland, many lined with mangroves, and small islands sit just offshore.
The main towns lie toward the west coast: Wete in the north, Chake Chake in the middle and Mkoani in the south, each near an inlet or harbour. A road runs down the island linking them, while smaller tracks lead through farmland and forest toward villages. In the far north, Ngezi Forest covers a block of protected woodland.
Arab traders called Pemba the Green Island for its hills and dense cultivation, and it has long been known for growing cloves. Off the west coast, the small island of Misali is protected for its reefs. A Pemba Island map poster shows the tangle of creeks and islets that sets it apart from the smoother outline of its southern neighbour.
Long, branching creeks cut into the western shore, sheltering the island's towns and harbours. On the poster they turn the coast into a finely drawn edge of water and land.
The main town lies near the middle of the island, close to the western inlets. Its streets form a small cluster where several of the island's roads converge.
Many small islands lie just off the coast, especially to the west, among them Misali. They scatter across the poster like fragments broken from the main outline.

Koteā ko Pemba Island
Pemba is less visited than Unguja, which makes it personal for those who know it: a diving trip, a family village, a season on a clove farm. The island's intricate coast gives the poster far more detail than a first glance suggests.
Add a family name, a village or a date to the title and subtitle, and keep the coordinates line. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The $9 HD download includes six sizes, or order a printed poster with a wooden frame.
