Te mapa
Mombasa's centre is an island. It sits between Tudor Creek to the north and the deep water of Kilindini Harbour to the south-west, connected to the mainland by the Nyali Bridge, the Makupa Causeway and the Likoni ferry. The shape is easy to read from above: a compact, rounded island with the city spreading out along the mainland shores on every side.
Mombasa has been a trading port on the Indian Ocean for centuries. Fort Jesus, built by the Portuguese in the 1590s, stands at the edge of the Old Town and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today, Kilindini is the largest port in East Africa, handling cargo for Kenya and several inland countries.
A Mombasa map poster sets the Old Town's narrow, winding lanes against the straighter streets of the modern centre and the larger dock basins on the harbour side. The creeks cut deep into the land, and the coast north and south of the island is lined with beaches and reefs along the ocean.
The heart of Mombasa lies on an island between two tidal creeks. Its rounded shoreline and the water around it give the map a clear, strong outline.
On the eastern shore, the Old Town's tangled lanes wrap around Fort Jesus, whose angular bastions stand out against the surrounding irregular streets.
Deep water on the island's western side holds East Africa's largest port, its quays and berths forming straight, industrial lines along the shore.
