Imola lies on the Via Emilia, the Roman road that runs straight across northern Italy from Rimini to Piacenza. The town began as the Roman Forum Cornelii, and its historic centre still keeps a regular, grid-like plan from that time. From above, the old centre is a compact block of streets, framed by the course of the old walls and anchored by the Rocca Sforzesca fortress.
South of the centre, along the Santerno river, lies the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari. The circuit hosted the San Marino Grand Prix for years and later the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. It is clearly visible on a map, a long, curving loop that follows the river and wraps around a park.
An Imola map poster has a notable precedent. In 1502, Leonardo da Vinci drew a plan of Imola, often described as one of the first truly accurate maps of a town seen from directly above. A modern black-and-white map continues that idea. It shows the Roman streets, the fortress, the river and the circuit, all in exact plan view.
The ancient Roman road crosses the town as a long, straight axis. The historic centre is organised around it, and it runs off both edges of the map.
Beside the Santerno river, the Enzo e Dino Ferrari circuit forms a distinctive loop through the parkland south of the centre. Motorsport fans will spot it at once.
The fortress at the edge of the old town appears as a clear, compact shape, a reminder of Imola's walled past within the modern streets.

Motorsport fans hang this map for the circuit, and many others hang it for the town itself: its Roman grid, its fortress and a plan once studied by Leonardo. It is a place where engineering and history share one sheet of paper.
