Te mapa
Japeri lies in the Baixada Fluminense, the lowland belt northwest of Rio de Janeiro, at the foot of the hills that rise toward the Serra do Mar. On the map it is not one dense centre. Neighbourhoods are spread across low ground and small hills, joined by winding roads, with green space and open land between them.
The railway is the defining line. Japeri is the terminus of one of Rio's main suburban commuter lines, and for many residents the station links the town to jobs in the city. On a Japeri map poster, the tracks run straight through the landscape, with the densest streets gathered close to the station.
The municipality became independent from Nova Iguaçu in 1991. Around its edges, the built-up area gives way to pasture, woodland and the beginnings of the hills. The mix of rail line, loose neighbourhoods and open land makes the plan very different from the compact grids of Rio's older districts.
Japeri is the terminus of a Rio commuter rail line. The tracks and station form the backbone of the town and the busiest part of the map.
Residential areas sit in separate pockets across low hills, connected by winding roads, rather than in one continuous urban grid.
Pasture and woodland surround the town and stretch toward the hills, giving the densest areas a wide, open frame on the poster.
