Jianchang lies in eastern Jiangxi, in hilly country where rivers have cut narrow valleys toward the lowlands of the Poyang basin. From above, the town follows its river closely. The oldest streets run parallel to the bank, and the newer districts spread across the flatter land, forming a plan that is longer than it is wide.
Beyond the built-up area the map turns quiet. Low hills rise on both sides, crossed by winding rural roads, and farmland fills the valley floors between them.
