Xinyu is a prefecture-level city in western Jiangxi province, set in a valley of rolling hills and farmland. From above, the urban core follows the Yuan River, which flows east through the city, with streets running parallel to its banks and bridges connecting the two sides. Beyond the centre, the grid gives way to fields, low wooded ridges and scattered villages.
The city grew rapidly in the second half of the twentieth century as an industrial centre, especially for steel, and more recently for solar energy manufacturing. In the south-west of the municipality lies Xiannü Lake, a large reservoir whose name means Fairy Maiden Lake and recalls an old legend set in the area.
