Xiangtan Map Poster & Print
Xiangtan is built along the Xiang River, the main river of Hunan province. Here the Xiang makes a wide, looping bend, and the city spreads along both banks, following the curve. The water gives the map a strong, sweeping line through the centre, crossed by several bridges that link the older and newer halves.
The city is one of three that together form the Chang-Zhu-Tan urban area with Changsha and Zhuzhou, and the three have grown steadily towards each other. Xiangtan has long been a trading and industrial centre. The old river port core lies close to the water, while newer districts extend on a larger scale away from the bank.
Shaoshan, the birthplace of Mao Zedong, lies within Xiangtan's administrative area, and many visitors pass through on their way there. A Xiangtan map poster shows a river city in the plainest terms: one great bend of water, and the streets that have grown up on both sides of it.
