Heshan is the central urban district of Yiyang in northern Hunan, on the southern side of the Zi River. From above, the river runs in a wide, steady curve across the map, flowing northeast toward Dongting Lake. The built-up area lies along the water, and its streets form a mix of regular modern blocks and older, smaller lanes near the riverbank.
Away from the river, the land becomes more varied. Low hills, ponds and farmland appear between the districts, and the roads bend around them.
