Changde sits in northern Hunan, on the banks of the Yuan River shortly before it flows out onto the lowlands around Dongting Lake. The city centre lies mainly on the north bank, arranged along the curve of the river. Bridges lead to the districts on the southern shore. Lakes, ponds and field patterns fill the surrounding plain.
Along the river levee runs the Changde Poetry Wall, a long flood wall carved with classical and modern poems. The city's territory also includes Taoyuan County, associated with the Peach Blossom Spring, the famous fable by the poet Tao Yuanming. Changde is known across Hunan for its rice noodles, a local staple.
