Te mapa
Hengyang lies in southern Hunan, where the Xiang River, the province's main waterway, is joined by two tributaries, the Zheng and the Lei. The confluences divide the city into distinct sections, each on its own bank. On a map the rivers form a branching pattern of pale bands, with bridges linking the urban pieces together.
On a Hengyang map poster, the older centre gathers near the water in a tight network of streets, and newer districts stretch outward in larger blocks. The Shigu Academy, one of the oldest academies in China, stands on a small rocky promontory where the Zheng meets the Xiang. Low hills and parks rise within the city and break up the grid.
Hengyang is known as the Wild Goose City, from a legend that migrating geese fly no further south than Huiyan Peak, the hill that marks the southern end of the Heng mountain range. The sacred Mount Heng, the southern of China's Five Great Mountains, lies to the north. The map shows a crossroads city held together by its rivers.
The Xiang, Zheng and Lei rivers meet within the city, creating a branching, Y-shaped pattern of water that organises the whole layout.
A small rocky point at the meeting of two rivers holds the historic Shigu Academy. On the map it is a sharp tip of land between the channels.
A low hill within the city, linked to the wild goose legend, appears as a green pause in the street network near the Xiang River.
