Te mapa
João Monlevade sits in the hills of central Minas Gerais, in a region long defined by iron ore. From above, the town follows the lie of the land. Streets curve along the contours of steep slopes, and neighbourhoods cling to ridges and the sides of valleys, while the river runs through lower ground. Almost nothing here is a straight grid, and the map shows it.
The town is named after Jean-Antoine Félix Dissandes de Monlevade, a French engineer who set up an ironworks in the area in the nineteenth century. Steelmaking still defines the place. A large integrated steelworks takes up a broad stretch of the valley floor, and its long buildings and rail sidings are unmistakable on the map.
A João Monlevade map poster brings out the contrast between these two forms. On one side sits the big, orderly block of the industrial plant. Around it, the residential streets twist and loop over the hills, and the dead ends and switchbacks show just how steep the terrain is.
The steel plant fills a large area of the valley with long, parallel shapes of sheds, yards and rail lines. It forms the largest single feature in the town's plan.
Residential roads bend and double back as they climb the hills. The result is a tangle of curves that shows the slopes even without any shading.
The river winds through the lower ground. It separates districts from one another and explains why the town grew in separate clusters rather than as one compact centre.
