Te mapa
Johannesburg was founded in 1886, after gold was found on the Witwatersrand, and the city is still arranged around that discovery. The central business district is a tight rectangular grid, laid out quickly on the surveyed stands of a mining camp. Along its southern edge, a line of old mines and pale tailings dumps runs east to west, tracing the reef itself.
North of the centre the pattern softens. Suburbs such as Parktown, Houghton and Rosebank follow ridges and valleys with curving roads, and the city is often described as one of the largest planted urban forests in the world. The M1 and the ring of motorways around the city cut long, smooth arcs through these neighbourhoods, which show strongly on a Johannesburg map poster.
To the southwest lies Soweto, whose township streets form their own extensive grid, including Vilakazi Street, where Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu both once lived. Johannesburg has no great river or coastline; it sits high on a watershed, so its map is defined almost entirely by roads, ridges and the long scar of the mining belt.

The original business district is a regular grid of narrow blocks, with Constitution Hill at its northern edge, where the Constitutional Court now stands on the site of a former prison.
Rocky ridges rise north and northwest of the centre, around Parktown and Northcliff. Streets bend around them in loops and switchbacks, a much softer, more organic pattern than the grid below.

Koteā ko Johannesburg
Johannesburg is a city of neighbourhoods, and people tend to be loyal to theirs, whether Melville, Maboneng or Soweto. A map of the whole city places that neighbourhood within the larger story of the reef, the roads and the ridges that shaped it.
Personalise the title, set a subtitle for a date or a street name, and choose one of five styles. Sand brings out the colours of the Highveld, while Noir suits the highways at night. Printed posters come on matte paper, with an optional wooden frame.
