Tokoza Map Poster & Print
Tokoza, often spelled Thokoza, is a township in the Ekurhuleni metropolitan area of Gauteng, south-east of Johannesburg and next to Katlehong and Alberton. From above, it is a dense grid of small plots and narrow streets. Row after row of houses fill the area almost completely.
The township's layout reflects its origins under apartheid planning: residential sections separated by main roads, open buffer strips and large hostel complexes. Later informal settlements and newer housing filled some of the gaps. Their patterns are denser and less regular than the original grid.
Tokoza was one of the areas hit hardest by political violence in the early 1990s, and a memorial in the township remembers those who died. A Tokoza map poster shows the streets of a community with a long and difficult history and a strong identity.
