Te mapa
Ka'ersai lies in the Hotan area of southern Xinjiang, on the band of irrigated oases that runs between the Kunlun Mountains and the Taklamakan Desert. From above, the map is split into two worlds: a green, finely divided area of fields, canals and villages, and beyond it the plain, empty surface of sand and gravel. The boundary between them is one of the most striking lines a map can show.
Oases here depend on rivers fed by snow and glacier melt from the Kunlun, spread across the land through a network of channels. Roads often follow those channels, lined with poplar trees that act as windbreaks. A Ka'ersai map poster draws that careful geometry, long parallel lines, rectangular plots and small settlements at the junctions, set against the blankness of the desert.
The settlement itself is modest, with a centre of shops and housing along the main roads. What gives the poster its character is the surrounding pattern, repeated and precise, of human effort organised around water. In black and white it reads almost like an abstract drawing, but every line reflects how people have made a home at the desert's edge.
Canals and field boundaries divide the oasis into long rectangular plots, forming a regular pattern around the settlement.
Where irrigation stops, the fields give way abruptly to open desert, leaving a large, clean empty space in the poster.
Straight roads follow the water channels between villages, drawing long parallel lines across the oasis.

Koteā ko Ka'ersai
Ka'ersai is a place most people know only if they are from there, and a map of it is a deeply personal piece. It also appeals to those drawn to desert landscapes and the stark beauty of oasis geometry.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line can be personalised, and five styles are available: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Choose $9 HD digital files or a printed poster with an optional wooden frame.
