Te mapa
Pangong Tso is one of the most striking lakes in Asia on a map: extremely long and narrow, running for well over a hundred kilometres east to west at an altitude of around 4,200 metres. Its western part lies in Ladakh, administered by India, while most of the lake extends east into Tibet, administered by China.
The water is brackish, and in winter the lake freezes over despite its salinity. The surrounding landscape is high, dry and mountainous, with few settlements and only a handful of roads. The lake became widely known to Indian audiences after it appeared in the final scenes of the film 3 Idiots.
A Pangong Tso map poster shows the lake as a single winding stroke, narrowing and widening as it bends between ridges. The emptiness of the surrounding terrain lets the shape speak for itself, which makes it one of the most graphic lake maps in our collection.
The lake stretches for more than a hundred kilometres while staying only a few kilometres wide, giving it an unusual, thread-like outline.
The lake runs across the line between Ladakh and Tibet, so a single body of water spans two administered regions.
Around the lake the land is dry, high and sparsely settled, leaving the water as the dominant form in an otherwise open map.

Koteā ko Pangong Tso
For travellers who made the long drive over the passes to reach Pangong, the lake is a memory of altitude, light and silence. Its long, thin shape works especially well in a wide horizontal frame.
