Te mapa
Kafr Kannā is an Arab town in Israel's Lower Galilee, a short distance northeast of Nazareth on the road toward Tiberias. It sits on gently sloping ground among hills and olive groves, and its street network grows outward from an older core in an irregular, organic way.
The town is widely identified in Christian tradition with Cana, where the Gospel of John places the wedding at which water was turned into wine. Churches commemorating the event stand in the old centre, and the town receives many pilgrims on the way between Nazareth and the Sea of Galilee.
A Kafr Kannā map poster shows the contrast between the tight, winding lanes of the old core and the looser streets that follow the slopes outward. The main road cuts through as a clear line, linking the town to Nazareth and to the rest of the Galilee hills.
Narrow, winding lanes in the historic centre surround the churches associated with the wedding at Cana, forming the densest and most intricate part of the map.
Newer neighbourhoods spread across the hillsides, their streets curving with the contours instead of following a grid, which gives the town an organic outline.
The main route toward Nazareth and Tiberias runs through town as a clear diagonal, the line that brings pilgrims and connects Kafr Kannā to the region.
