Te mapa
Kafr Shukr lies in the southern Nile Delta, north of Cairo, in some of the most intensively farmed land in Egypt. The Delta is completely flat, and on a map it is divided into long, narrow field strips edged by irrigation canals. The town sits within this pattern as a dense block of buildings.
Its streets are narrow and closely packed, a typical Delta town arrangement in which buildings crowd together and leave the surrounding land for cultivation. Canals and drains run past in long lines, sometimes straight, sometimes gently curving, and roads often run alongside them on raised banks. Villages dot the fields at short distances from one another.
A Kafr Shukr map poster shows the balance between water, land and settlement that defines the Delta. The drawing is full of fine lines, canals, field edges and small lanes, with the town as its densest point. In black and white it has an almost woven texture.
Canals and drains cross the landscape around the town in long lines, the network that makes farming in the Delta possible and gives the map its structure.
Farmland is divided into long, thin plots, a pattern typical of the Nile Delta that fills the space around the town with fine parallel lines.
The town itself is a dense mass of narrow streets and tightly packed buildings, standing out sharply against the open fields around it.
