Te mapa
Kahoolawe lies a few kilometres south-west of Maui. From above it is compact and roughly oval, with a gently domed interior that rises to a summit plateau. The island sits in the rain shadow of Haleakalā, so it is much drier than its neighbours. Its coast is mostly cliffs and rocky shores, with a few small bays and gullies carved by the rare rains.
There are no towns and no permanent residents. The map shows little beyond a network of tracks, erosion gullies and the curving shoreline. Much of the upper island has lost its topsoil, leaving wide areas of bare, reddish hardpan that restoration crews are slowly replanting. A Kahoolawe map poster is quiet and uncluttered, a single shape floating in open water.
From the Second World War until 1990, the United States military used the island as a bombing and training range. After years of protest and advocacy by Native Hawaiian groups, it was returned to the State of Hawaii. It is now a reserve with restricted access, where cultural and ecological restoration continues.
The centre of the island rises into a broad, gentle dome. On the poster it appears as an open interior crossed by only a few tracks.
Decades of grazing and military use stripped much of the soil. Gullies now cut down from the plateau toward the coast in fine, branching lines.
A narrow channel separates Kahoolawe from Maui. From Maui's southern shores, the island is often seen as a low shape on the horizon.

Koteā ko Kahoolawe
Kahoolawe matters deeply to many people in Hawaii as a place of cultural renewal and restoration. The poster suits volunteers who have worked on the island, people with family ties to Maui, and anyone moved by the story of its return.
You can add a Hawaiian name, a date or coordinates in the title and subtitle, and choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Download six print sizes for $9, or order a framed print.
