Te mapa
Maui is the second-largest of the Hawaiian Islands, and its shape explains its nickname, the Valley Isle. Two volcanic mountains, the older West Maui Mountains and the much larger Haleakalā, are joined by a flat isthmus. That central valley holds Kahului, with the main harbour and airport, and Wailuku, which sits at the foot of the western mountains.
Most of Maui's roads follow the coast rather than crossing the mountains. On the west side the road curves past Lahaina, the old royal capital and whaling port, which was largely destroyed by wildfire in 2023. To the south, Kīhei and Wailea line a sunny shore, and just offshore sits Molokini, a small crescent that is the rim of a sunken crater.
On the northeast coast, the Hāna Highway winds through rainforest, doubling back around gulches and crossing dozens of narrow bridges. Above it all, Haleakalā National Park protects the summit and its great eroded crater. A Maui map poster shows the contrast clearly: tight coastal curves, empty mountain slopes and the valley that ties the two halves together.
This low plain between the two volcanoes was once covered by sugarcane fields. Kahului and Wailuku sit at its northern edge, and on the map it reads as the island's waist.
The highway along the northeast coast twists through valleys and over one-lane bridges. Printed in fine line, it becomes a looping thread that follows the coast toward Hāna.
Off the south coast, a partly submerged volcanic crater curves like a crescent moon. It is a marine reserve, and on the poster it is one of the smallest and most distinctive shapes.

Koteā ko Maui
Many people marry, honeymoon or spend every winter on Maui, and its double-mountain outline is instantly recognisable. Hanging the map keeps a particular stretch of coast in view, whether that is a snorkelling cove near Wailea, a sunrise on Haleakalā or a slow drive to Hāna.
