Te mapa
Niʻihau lies southwest of Kauai, the westernmost of Hawaii's inhabited main islands. On a map it appears as a compact, elongated shape with higher ground along its eastern side and low, flatter land to the west and south. Few roads cross it, and much of the island is open scrubland.
The island has been privately owned since 1864 by the same family, and access for visitors has long been restricted, which is why it is sometimes called the Forbidden Island. Its small community, centred on the village of Puʻuwai on the west coast, is one of the few places where Hawaiian remains the everyday language. The island is also known for its fine shell lei.
A Niʻihau map poster reflects a place shaped more by quiet than by development. Several shallow, intermittent lakes sit in the low interior, among the largest natural lakes in the state, and the coastline is edged by beaches and rocky points. The result is a spare, respectful image of a very particular island.
The island's only village sits on the western coast and forms the one clear cluster of streets on the map.
Shallow lakes fill low ground in the interior after rains, adding soft, rounded shapes to an otherwise open landscape.
Higher ground rises along the eastern side of the island, facing Kauai across the channel, while the west lies lower and flatter.

Koteā ko Niʻihau
Niʻihau holds deep meaning for people with family ties to the island and a quiet fascination for those who know it only from a distance. Its restrained map suits thoughtful, uncluttered spaces.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line can be personalised, and the map comes in Classic black and white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Download HD files for $9 or order a matte print with an optional wooden frame.
