Te mapa
Kameyama lies in the north of Mie prefecture, where the plains near Ise Bay rise west toward the Suzuka mountains. From above, the city is a series of settlements along valleys and river terraces rather than one dense block. Wooded hills separate the districts, and major expressways and rail lines cut through the gaps between them.
The historic Tōkaidō highway between Edo and Kyoto passed through here, and Kameyama had several post towns along it. Seki-juku, within the city, keeps a long street of traditional townhouses, and parts of Kameyama's castle remain on a rise in the centre. In more recent years the name became known across Japan through a large LCD television factory.
A Kameyama map poster shows the old road and the new infrastructure side by side. The narrow line of the historic street, the curves of the expressway interchanges and the valley farmland create a layered composition. In black and white the wooded hills stay blank, which lets the settlements and routes stand out clearly.
A preserved stretch of the old Tōkaidō runs through Seki, a long narrow street lined with traditional buildings that shows up as a clean line.
In central Kameyama, the castle site sits on raised ground, and streets bend around its edges in a pattern that predates the modern city.
Major highways meet near the city, and their looping ramps add large, sweeping curves to the map among fields and small streets.
