Te mapa
Karachayevsk lies in the North Caucasus, in the Karachay-Cherkess Republic, where the Teberda River joins the Kuban in a steep-sided mountain valley. The terrain dictates the map: the town stretches in a long, narrow band along the riverbanks, and the streets follow the valley floor, turning where the river turns and stopping where the slopes grow too steep.
The town was founded in the 1920s and has changed names several times. From 1944 to 1957, the years when the Karachay people were deported from their homeland, it was called Klukhori. On a map the older centre and newer districts occupy separate pockets of flat land, linked by roads and bridges across the river.
Karachayevsk is also a gateway to the high mountains: the road south follows the Teberda toward protected forests and the resort of Dombay. A Karachayevsk map poster captures a town shaped entirely by its valley, where water, bridges and slopes decide every line and the empty space of the mountains frames the whole composition.
The Teberda flows into the Kuban at the town, and their junction forms a distinctive Y shape that anchors the whole map.
Streets run in long lines parallel to the river, squeezed between the water and the slopes, giving the town an elongated, ribbon-like outline.
The route south along the Teberda leads into the mountains, a single winding line pointing toward the protected valleys and high peaks beyond.
