Te mapa
Karviná lies in the Moravian-Silesian Region, on the Olza river where it forms the border with Poland. The town grew around the historic centre of Fryštát, with its square, chateau and park. On a map that old core is a small, tight cluster of streets surrounded by much larger, looser districts of twentieth-century housing.
Coal shaped almost everything here. Deep mining in the Ostrava-Karviná basin transformed the landscape, and subsidence caused whole parts of the original settlement to sink and be abandoned. The best-known reminder is the Church of St Peter of Alcantara, which now leans visibly because the ground beneath it dropped by tens of metres.
A Karviná map poster shows that unusual structure: the compact old town, planned estates in regular blocks, the river along the border, and ponds and open ground where mining has reshaped the land. It is an honest industrial landscape, and drawn in black and white it becomes a striking one, with every layer of its history visible.
The historic square and the lanes around it form the most intricate part of the map, with the chateau park opening a green space beside them.
Water-filled hollows left by mining appear across the area as irregular shapes. They are one of the most distinctive features of the Karviná landscape.
The river marks the border with Poland along the edge of town. Its winding line separates two countries on the same sheet.

Koteā ko Karviná
Karviná is a town of mining families, of people who came for work and of those who grew up in its housing districts. A map shows its unusual shape honestly, and for many former residents that recognition means more than a postcard.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line can all be personalised with a family name, a year or a street. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Noir suits the industrial character especially well.
