Ketanggungan is a town in Brebes Regency, in the western part of Central Java. It lies on the low, fertile ground inland from the Java Sea coast, where paddy fields cover most of the land. Roads and a railway line pass through, linking it to the larger towns of the region.
The settlement pattern is typical of rural Java. A denser centre forms around the main road and market area. Beyond it, villages stretch out in lines along smaller roads and irrigation channels, each surrounded by fields. The boundary between town and countryside is soft rather than sharp.
