Khān Neshīn is a district centre in southern Helmand, Afghanistan, on the Helmand River close to the edge of the Registan desert. From above, the river is everything. A narrow ribbon of irrigated land follows the water, with fields and compounds packed along its banks, while open desert stretches away on either side.
Settlement here follows the logic of water. Irrigation channels lead off the river and split the valley floor into long, thin fields, and villages line the edge of the cultivated land where it meets dry ground. Beyond that line, the map is almost empty apart from tracks.
