Kharan lies in western Balochistan, at the edge of the Kharan Desert, a broad expanse of sand dunes and dry plains. The landscape around the town is harsh and open, bordered by ranges of bare hills. The town was once the capital of the princely state of Kharan, which later became part of Pakistan. The old centre and its fort area remain the core of the settlement.
