Te mapa
Kilwinning sits in North Ayrshire, a few miles inland from the Firth of Clyde, on the banks of the River Garnock. On a map the old town is a small knot of streets on the east side of the river, centred on the ruins of Kilwinning Abbey, with post-war housing estates and newer districts spreading out in loops and cul-de-sacs around it.
The town has two well-known traditions. Lodge Mother Kilwinning claims to be the oldest Masonic lodge in Scotland and holds the number 0 on the Scottish roll. The Ancient Society of Kilwinning Archers still holds the papingo shoot, in which archers aim at a target raised on the abbey tower, a custom dating back centuries.
Beyond the town, the Garnock heads south toward Irvine and the coast, and railway lines split at Kilwinning's junction toward Ayr and Largs. A Kilwinning map poster shows the river, the old abbey core, the curves of the estates and the rail lines, with the open Ayrshire countryside around them.

The Garnock runs along the edge of the town centre, a winding line that heads south toward Irvine and the sea.
Lines to Ayr and to Largs split at Kilwinning, forming a clear fork of tracks through the town on the map.
