Te mapa
Kirov stands on the Vyatka River in north-eastern European Russia and was known as Vyatka, and earlier Khlynov, before being renamed in 1934. The historic centre sits on a high bank above the river, where a regular grid of streets, laid out under an eighteenth-century plan, runs back from the bluffs toward newer districts.
The Vyatka curves broadly past the city, with low meadows and islands on the opposite bank, so the map shows a dense, orderly city on one side and open, watery ground on the other. Along the edge of the high bank run public gardens and embankment walks, including the Alexander Garden, laid out in the nineteenth century.
The region is famous for Dymkovo toys, brightly painted clay figures that take their name from a settlement across the river from the old town. A Kirov map poster turns the plan into something close to an engraving: straight streets, a sweeping river and a clear line where the town meets the floodplain.
The old town sits on a raised bank above the Vyatka. On the poster, the city's edge follows the river bluff, creating a firm boundary between streets and water.
The centre follows a regular plan of long, straight streets crossing at right angles. It gives the map a calm, measured order that is easy to read from across a room.
Across the Vyatka, meadows, channels and islands spread over low ground. Their loose shapes contrast with the tight grid of the city and give the print a sense of space.

For people who grew up in Kirov or still call it Vyatka, the map is a portrait of home drawn in its most essential lines. The river and the old grid make it recognisable instantly.
