Te mapa
Yoshkar-Ola, capital of the Mari El Republic, lies in the forested middle Volga region. The small Malaya Kokshaga River runs through the city from north to south. On a map the city is compact and fairly regular. Blocks and avenues spread out on either side of the river, and the whole urban area is surrounded by woodland and open country.
The city is known for its unusual centre, rebuilt in recent decades. The embankment has been lined with new buildings in a pseudo-European style, including towers, arcades and a clock with moving figures, and replicas of historic facades stand along the water. As a result, a Russian regional capital has a riverside that recalls Flemish and Italian towns.
A Yoshkar-Ola map poster centres on the river and the squares and embankments beside it. Further out, broad avenues and the large blocks of Soviet-era housing districts form a steady grid, and parks and green strips follow the water. Forest edges close the composition on almost every side.
The narrow river runs through the heart of the city, with landscaped embankments and squares grouped closely along both banks.
The central riverside quarter was rebuilt in a European-inspired style, forming a dense cluster of small blocks and squares around the water.
Woodland presses close to the city on most sides, giving the map a well-defined outline instead of gradual suburban sprawl.
