Saransk grew from a seventeenth-century fortress on the Insar River and is now the capital of Mordovia. The centre is on high ground on the right bank. It has a fairly regular grid with wide avenues and a series of large public squares, mostly rebuilt in recent decades. The river curves along the northern and eastern edge of the old centre.
The city was one of the smaller hosts of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Mordovia Arena was built for the tournament on the Insar riverbank, and on a Saransk map poster its oval stands out clearly beside the loop of the river. New embankments and parks were laid out around it in the same period.
Near the centre, the Cathedral of Saint Theodore Ushakov and Millennium Square form a formal ensemble. Beyond it, the city spreads into large Soviet-era residential districts, industrial zones and rail yards, and then quickly gives way to the open fields and woods of the Mordovian countryside.
