Te mapa
Ulyanovsk spreads across both banks of the Volga, but its historic centre sits on a high ridge between the Volga and the smaller Sviyaga, two rivers that flow in opposite directions only a few kilometres apart. Here the Volga is part of the Kuibyshev Reservoir and spreads into a vast body of water. Two long bridges cross it, linking the old city with the districts on the left bank.
Founded in 1648 as the fortress of Simbirsk, the city was renamed in 1924 after Vladimir Lenin, whose family name was Ulyanov and who was born here in 1870. The novelist Ivan Goncharov, author of Oblomov, was also born in Simbirsk. The city is now known for making aircraft and vehicles, including at the UAZ plant.
Water dominates an Ulyanovsk map poster: the great expanse of the reservoir, the narrower Sviyaga curling along the west and the bridges stretching across. Between them sits the dense street grid of the old centre on its ridge. On the far shore, the newer Zavolzhsky district is laid out in a more open, planned pattern.

The Volga and Sviyaga run close together but in opposite directions. The old city sits on the high ground between them, which gives the map its unusual shape.
The Venets, the high crest of the ridge above the Volga, holds the old centre's parks and promenades. It marks the edge where the grid meets the drop to the water.

Koteā ko Ulyanovsk
Many people remember Ulyanovsk for the view from the Venets across the Volga, a horizon unlike any other on the river. A map that captures the bridges and the wide water is a fitting reminder for anyone from the city or who studied there.
Write your own title and subtitle, perhaps using the old name Simbirsk, and adjust the coordinates line. Choose among Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand, then download 300 DPI files in six sizes for $9 or order a print.
