Te mapa
Kizel lies in the northeast of Perm Krai, on the western slope of the Ural Mountains. The town grew along the valley of the Kizel river, and its outline on a map is long and irregular: districts spread along the valley floor and into side valleys, separated by forested hills. There is no single compact centre so much as a series of neighbourhoods joined by road and rail.
For much of the twentieth century Kizel was the heart of the Kizel coal basin, and the mines shaped the town's layout. Settlements grew up around the workings, and railway spurs linked them together. Since the mines closed around the turn of the century the population has fallen considerably, but the old pattern remains legible, with scattered clusters of streets set among hills and woodland.
A Kizel map poster captures a landscape typical of the Urals mining belt: river valleys, rail lines, compact housing districts and dense forest in between. For people who grew up here or whose families worked in the mines, it is a detailed record of a place that has changed a great deal, still recognisable in the lines of its streets.
The town follows the course of the river, so the map shows an elongated form stretching along the valley rather than a centre radiating outward.
Separate clusters of streets, several of which grew up around former coal workings, sit apart from one another, giving the map a scattered, archipelago-like structure.
A rail line threads through the valley and connects the districts, its smooth curves standing out against the irregular street pattern and forested slopes.

Koteā ko Kizel
Many families have left Kizel over the past decades, but ties to the town remain strong. A map of it is a way to hold on to a particular street, school or district, and the long valley form makes a striking print.
Write your own title and subtitle, perhaps a family name or the years you lived there, and choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Buy the $9 HD files in six print sizes or order a printed poster with an optional wooden frame.
