Te mapa
Kobayashi occupies a broad basin in the southwest of Miyazaki Prefecture on Kyushu, close to the border with Kagoshima. The Kirishima volcanic group rises to the south, and on the map the town's compact centre sits amid a wide spread of rice fields and farm plots, with forested hills closing in around the edges of the basin.
The JR Kitto Line runs through the town, and the station area forms the heart of the street network, with shopping streets and residential blocks extending outward along the main roads. Streams descending from the mountains cross the basin, adding thin curving lines between the straight edges of the paddies and fields.
Kobayashi is known for the clarity of its night skies and for spring water that rises at the foot of the mountains, both products of its clean upland setting. A Kobayashi map poster captures the town at the centre of its basin, the farmland around it and the first slopes of Kirishima on the southern margin.
The lower slopes of the Kirishima volcanic range rise at the southern edge of the map, where the pattern of fields gives way to forest and winding mountain roads.
Rice paddies and vegetable fields fill the flat basin floor in small rectangular plots, creating a finely divided texture that surrounds the town on the poster.
The streets around Kobayashi Station on the JR Kitto Line form the densest part of the map, a small grid from which roads spread across the basin.

Koteā ko Kobayashi
Kobayashi is a hometown for many who moved on to Miyazaki, Fukuoka or Tokyo, and a map of the basin brings back the view of paddies with the mountains behind. It also appeals to anyone who has hiked Kirishima or stayed beneath its skies.
