Te mapa
Kondoa lies in the Dodoma Region of central Tanzania, on the road that runs north from Dodoma toward Babati and Arusha. The town is modest in size, with a compact centre of commercial streets and residential areas spreading along the main roads. Around it, the land opens into dry hills and farmland, crossed by seasonal watercourses that fill during the rains.
The area is best known for the Kondoa Rock-Art Sites, a UNESCO World Heritage property of painted rock shelters in the hills around the town. The paintings, some of them very old, depict people, animals and hunting scenes, and several local communities still regard the shelters as places of ritual importance.
On a map, Kondoa is a study in contrasts between a small cluster of streets and a wide landscape of hills and valleys. A Kondoa map poster captures that openness with a few clean lines, a portrait of a town that serves as a gateway to one of Africa's most significant rock-art regions.
The main route from Dodoma passes through town and continues north, forming the spine along which shops, houses and services are arranged.
A small cluster of streets marks the heart of Kondoa, compact and irregular compared with the open land and scattered homesteads around it.
Dry hills and rocky slopes rise around the town, the same landscape that shelters the painted rock sites protected by UNESCO.
