Kraksaan lies on the northern coast of East Java, facing the Madura Strait, and serves as the administrative seat of Probolinggo Regency. From above, the town lines up along the main coastal highway, the historic east–west route across Java, with its denser streets on either side and green fields spreading inland toward the volcanic uplands.
Toward the sea, the land turns flat and wet, with rice paddies and ponds cut into neat rectangles and small channels leading down to the shore. The coastline here is low and uneven rather than dramatic, and on a map it becomes a long, fine edge where the land slowly gives way to open water.
